La mayoría de las cataratas se desarrollan lentamente a lo largo de los años. El principal síntoma de este padecimiento es la visión borrosa. Padecer cataratas, puede ser similar a ver el mundo a través de una ventana nublada.
Con el paso de los años, especialmente a partir de los 50, el cristalino empieza a perder la transparencia que lo caracteriza y a tornarse opaco; esto impide el paso nítido de la luz hacia la retina, que es donde se forman las imágenes. Así, el paciente sufre una pérdida gradual de la visión.
Las cataratas son la primera causa de ceguera en países en desarrollo y la patología ocular con mayor número de operaciones en los países desarrollados. Tarde o temprano, todos acabamos desarrollando cataratas ligadas a la edad.
